From the ground up, the Craig & Co. architectural team has carefully worked out every detail to be the perfect fit for this family. Traveling with a few designer and architect friends, we stayed at the beautiful @Estellemanor, a turn of the century country house/members’ club where @Romanandwilliams worked their magic. Loved visiting @daylesfordfarm, @blenheimpalace (limited to the park since Amazon had taken over the palace for filming), wandering and antiquing at Stow-on-the Wold, Burford, and Chipping Norton. We’re thrilled to have been selected for an Acan We’re thrilled to have been selected for an Acanthus Award by the midwest chapter of the @icaachicago for their Allied Arts & Craftsmanship award! When the time came for this landmark private club in downtown Chicago to renovate its primary event space - the double-height Drawing Room - an opportunity presented itself to address an unfortunate architectural intervention from a few decades ago. The plaster capitals of two central columns had been enclosed in a huge vented soffit when the building added air conditioning. We redesigned the ceilings, defining the room’s bays with plaster moldings that served as a means to distribute the air conditioning while respecting the design intent of this beautiful room. The nature of the floral pattern around the entry door translated perfectly for this application and it’s where we began our sketches, and @hydeparkmouldings mastered the three-dimensional shapes that would ultimately be cast and installed throughout the drawing room. #HistoricRestoration #AcanthusAwards #ICAA #Handcrafted #LandmarkBuilding #HydeParkMouldings #Chicago #CraigandCompany
Places that Inspire: The Illinois Governor’s Man Places that Inspire: The Illinois Governor’s Mansion. Continuing our research on Lincoln for recent projects at New York’s Union League Club, our team made a road trip to the Land of Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois to visit the Governor’s Mansion. Recently redecorated by Michael Smith in collaboration with Illinois First Lady MK Pritzker the two wove together the history of The People’s House and modern living seamlessly and beautifully. The Chicago Room is dazzling — a tribute to Illinois’ largest city and its boundless creativity in the early 20th century. Papered in Frances Elkins’ signature silver tea paper with her canopied beds commanding center stage alongside a Samuel Marx bureau bookcase... Beyond the interiors, we particularly loved the curating — from the collection of portrait miniatures surrounding an antique mirror to the surrealist dreamscapes of Chicago painter Gertrude Abercrombie to the many portraits of Lincoln painted over the past 150 years to pieces by Illinois contemporary artists Theaster Gates, Judy Ledgerwood and the tattoo master Kevin Veara.
